A Forward To My Future Self

“Well, what is something that you would like to do?” is the question I was asked after a colleague of mine shared their interest of becoming a Correctional Officer… Though I could’ve gone with my traditional response such as, “a Sign Language Interpreter”, the truth was; I’ve been using that line so long I hadn’t given myself enough time to answer the question with an honest response, I kind of just winged it to get through conversations. After a while it didn’t take long for me to realize, that being an Interpreter wasn’t all I wanted to do. So, I answered truthfully and said, “you know, what I want to pursue as a career, can’t be narrowed down to one occupation”. Of course I got the awkward stare, and no I wasn’t going to elaborate on what occurred in the past that lead me up to this point however, what I knew in the moment was, that this is where I was at, and I was ok with not knowing.

Since the age of 16, I had this idea of where I wanted to attend school, when I’d get my credentials, and how. Man I thought I had it all figured out, and I wasn’t going to let any of life’s obstacles stop me. Let’s just say, like now, I had a lot to learn.

The advice I’d give to my younger self would be, not put so much pressure on trying to do things based on what’s considered traditional when no one is promised tomorrow.

To conclude this, I would like to share a quote by Pablo Picasso. “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist”.

With love,

  1. I think you’re absolutely phenomenal. Not everyone holds the key to knowing where they want to be, but it’s never about the destination. It’s about enjoying the process that shines perspective as to what you really want to make a career out of. Experience, experiement, and live. Who says you have to be locked down to one thing? 😏
